Pennsylvania – Death of One Spouse How To File Return

Currently, the TaxACT program only allows one Pennsylvania return to be attached to the federal return.

In order to file two separate returns in Pennsylvania, you would need to create two additional federal returns and split the income appropriately between these two returns (within the Federal Q&A), and then complete the PA module for each.

For the surviving spouse return, you would mark Single on the federal return and then enter only your income and deductions within the Federal Q&A. This will properly mark Single on the PA return, as requested in the PA instruction book.

For the deceased spouse return, you would also mark Single for the federal return and enter the date of death. Then enter only the spouse’s income during the federal Q&A. This will then mark the filing status Deceased on the PA return and transfer the correct income to this PA return.

After the process above you would have 3 federal returns created. The first federal return is the Joint federal return with both spouses incomes, which will be filed with the IRS (you will not file a PA return with this Online User ID).

The next two federal returns you create you will NOT file, but you WILL file the PA return for each person created with these two federal returns.
