Estimated Tax Payments – Estimated Taxes Paid for Multiple States
Below are instructions for entry of multiple state estimated tax payments. These steps are necessary to ensure that the correct amount flows to the individual state return you are currently filing and the Federal Schedule A line 5 State and local income taxes or general sales tax in the event you are itemizing deductions on the return.
The total of all estimated tax payments made for the current tax year will be automatically included as a federal itemized deduction on Schedule A.
To enter estimated state tax payments for multiple states:
TaxAct Online
- From within the TaxAct return, navigate to the Federal tab.
- Click Federal, state and local estimated tax payments made to expand the list and select State Estimates.
- On the State Estimated Tax Payments – Summary screen, you will have the option to add additional states. Click + Add Form 1040 State Est Tax Paid for all states you are reporting.
Desktop
- From within the TaxAct return, navigate to the Q&A tab via the menu bar at the top of the program.
- Click Tools and select Topics Assistant from the dropdown list.
- Navigate to the Federal, state and local estimated tax payments made topic.
- On the State Estimated Tax Payments screen, click Yes and enter the appropriate information.
- On the State Estimated Tax Payments – Summary screen, you will have the option to add additional states. Click + Add New Copy of Form 1040 State Est Tax Paid for all states you are reporting.
Additional Information
If you:
- Made a fourth quarter state estimated tax payment for the previous tax year in January of the current tax year
- Paid a balance due with your previous years state return.
