Idaho – Food Tax Credit Refund

If you are an Idaho resident but are not required to file a tax return, you may still be eligible to receive the grocery credit refund.

To enter the appropriate information in TaxAct, depending on your situation, follow the steps below.

TaxAct Online

  1. From within the TaxAct return, navigate to the State tab from the side menu.
  2. Click Idaho under the State tab to access the Idaho Quick Q&A Topics screen.
  3. Click Miscellaneous Topics to expand the list.
  4. Click Filing Requirements.
  5. On the screen titled Idaho – Filing Requirements, check the appropriate box:
    1. If you are not required to file a return and are only filing to receive a refund of amounts withheld (and NOT the food tax credit refund) select the box, Check if not required to file (filing only to receive refund of amounts withheld)
    2. If you are not required to file a return and are only filing to receive the food tax credit refund (and NOT a refund of amounts withheld) select the box, Check if not required to file (filing only to receive food tax credit refund)
    3. If you are not required to file a return and are filing to receive a refund of amounts withheld AND the food tax credit refund, select the box, Check if not required to file (filing only to receive food tax credit refund)

Desktop

  1. From within the TaxAct return, navigate to the Q&A tab via the menu bar at the top of the program.
  2. Click Tools and select Topics Assistant from the dropdown list.
  3. Navigate to the Summary portion of the California return and click Review Q&A Topics to access the California Quick Q&A Topics screen.
  4. Click Miscellaneous Topics to expand the list.
  5. Click Filing Requirements.
  6. On the screen titled Idaho – Filing Requirements, check the appropriate box:
    1. If you are not required to file a return and are only filing to receive a refund of amounts withheld (and NOT the food tax credit refund) select the box, Check if not required to file (filing only to receive refund of amounts withheld)
    2. If you are not required to file a return and are only filing to receive the food tax credit refund (and NOT a refund of amounts withheld) select the box, Check if not required to file (filing only to receive food tax credit refund)
    3. If you are not required to file a return and are filing to receive a refund of amounts withheld AND the food tax credit refund, select the box, Check if not required to file (filing only to receive food tax credit refund)

Actual Sales Tax Entry

Additionally, you may enter the actual amount of sales tax paid during the tax year (up to $250 for you, your spouse, and each dependent). To enter this amount in TaxAct:

  1. From within the Idaho Quick Q&A Topics screen, click Credits.
  2. Click Review next to Food Tax Credit.
  3. Enter the applicable information.

NOTE: To claim the actual amount of sales tax paid on food instead of the calculated amount, taxpayers must attach scanned copies of receipts with qualifying food purchases to the return.
