Early Edition State Planner
The Early Edition of the TaxAct® software contains a State Planner Tool to enable you to complete a worksheet and estimate your state taxes for the current year. This worksheet should only be used as an estimate of what your state refund or amount due may be and should not be used to file your state return. When the Final State programs are released in January you will be able to purchase the state program and complete the state return. Until that time, we are not necessarily aware of all of the instructions for the state programs as they do not release them to us until late in the year.
When using the Q&A interview screens to complete the State Planner, a summary of your State Planning Worksheet will be available after you complete the last question in that section of the Q&A.
Note that you can only do the interview for one State Planner at a time. However, using the steps below you can review or modify any state’s data you have previously entered, as the information is retained in your program. This allows you to plan for multiple states, you just must view the information for each state individually.
To select a State Planner in your TaxAct return:
- From within your TaxAct return (Online or Desktop), click on the Basic Info tab
- Click the Personal Info link located below the Federal tab
- Continue to the screen titled State of Residence where you can select the state you wish to work with in the State Q&A section
- Click on the State tab and click Edit Planner to enter information for the State Planner
- Repeat the steps to select a different state
