If the decedent’s estate has been open for more than two years, you must indicate this on Form 1041 U.S. Income Tax Return for Estates and Trusts, Line 8 and attach an explanation for the delay in closing the estate.

To check Other Information on Form 1041, Line 8:

1. From within your TaxAct return, click Federal. On smaller devices, click in the upper left-hand corner, then click Federal.
2. Click Basic Information in the Federal Quick Q&A Topics menu to expand, then click Other Information.
3. Click Yes, then proceed with the interview questions to enter or review the appropriate information.

To attach an explanation:

1. From within your TaxAct return, click Federal. On smaller devices, click in the upper left-hand corner, then click Federal.
2. Click Miscellaneous Topics in the Federal Quick Q&A Topics menu to expand, then click E-Filing Notes and Explanations.
3. Continue with the interview process to enter all of the appropriate information.
