IRS Form 9465 – Installment Agreement Request – TaxAct

If a taxpayer is unable to pay the full balance due, they may request a monthly payment plan by filing Form 9465, Installment Agreement Request. The IRS generally recommends paying as much of the outstanding tax liability as possible before requesting an installment agreement for the remaining balance.

Form 9465 is available in all versions of TaxAct and may be filed independently, even if the taxpayer’s individual income tax return has already been submitted.

Note that filing Form 9465 does NOT guarantee requests for a payment plan. The IRS will contact you to approve or deny your installment plan request.

For guidance on completing Form 9465 within TaxAct, see the Form 9465 – Installment Agreement Request (Before Filing Return) FAQ.

Additional Information

When completing Form 9465, Installment Agreement Request, taxpayers who elect to make monthly payments through Electronic Funds Withdrawal (EFW) will be prompted to enter their banking information within the Form 9465 interview.

  1. During the federal e-file process, select Mail a Check on the Federal Balance Due Options screen. Do not select the direct withdrawal payment option for the balance due.
  2. Do not enter banking information under the Direct Withdrawal payment method during e-filing. Doing so will authorize the IRS to withdraw the entire balance due in a single transaction rather than establishing the requested installment agreement. Banking information for the installment plan should be entered only through the Form 9465 interview.
  3. TaxAct will provide Federal E-File Instructions for review and printing during the filing process. Advise taxpayers that filing Form 9465 does not guarantee approval of an installment agreement. The IRS will notify the taxpayer whether the request has been approved or denied.
  4. Retain Form 1040-V, Payment Voucher, with the taxpayer’s records. If the IRS denies the installment agreement request, Form 1040-V may be used to submit payment of the balance due. The voucher should not be mailed unless payment is required following IRS correspondence. See E-Filing – Direct Debit Not Set Up print instructions for Form 1040-V, Payment Voucher
