Extension of Time to File Your Individual Tax Return
If you need an extension of time to file your tax return, you can create and file an extension Form 4868 to request a 6-month extension of time to file your return through TaxAct.
Note the following:
- If you expect a refund, you don’t need to file an extension, but it will protect you from late-filing penalties if you file later and actually owe tax.
- The Failure to File Penalty (return or extension) is 5% of the unpaid taxes for each month or part of a month that a tax return is late.
- Interest will start to accrue on any unpaid balance after April 15.
- Some states require you to file a federal extension before you can file an extension with them.
- We recommend importing your 1040 before filing an extension. You can do this in Basic Info.
