E-Filing – “Missed E-File Deadline” Message After October 15th

If you attempt to e-file both your federal and state returns together after the October 15th extension deadline, you may receive a "Missed E-File Deadline" rejection message.

Some states do not currently accept e-filed returns after October 15th. If the federal and state returns are filed together, both returns may be rejected.

If your federal and state returns are both rejected for this reason, you can still e-file only your federal return. However, the state return will need to be paper filed. To e-file only your federal return, repeat the electronic filing steps and select Federal return only.

You must continue through the filing steps until you click Submit.

After submitting your federal return, repeat the filing steps and select Mail Paper Return. Select State Only when prompted and complete the remaining steps to print and mail your state return.
