Filing an Amended Individual State Tax Return
If you need to correct a state individual tax return filed through TaxAct, follow the steps below to prepare and file an amended return.
- Obtain a copy of the original return. See the FAQ How to Obtain a Copy of a Tax Return for details.
- Determine the specific updates or corrections needed for your original return.
- Open your return and update or correct the relevant information.
- Note: If you’ve already amended your federal return, those changes may automatically carry over to the state return.
- Go to the State tab, select the relevant state, then click Amended Return.
- Follow the interview process to enter or review the appropriate information.
- To file, click on the Filing tab and select Efile return (listed below are the states that accept e-filed amended returns).
- If the state is not listed, select Mail-Paper Return and follow the instructions to print and mail your amended return.(if available).
- When paper-filing a return, make sure to include any supporting documents (e.g., corrected Forms W-2, 1099, etc.) as required by your state.
Supported States
If you are filing an amended return for the current filing year, you can e-file amended returns for the states listed below. Amended returns for states not listed below, and prior year amended returns are required to be paper-filed.
